Paper Shop Towels Wholesale: A Buyer's Guide to Specs, Formats & Suppliers

Wholesale & Sourcing8 min readBy Rachel Zhao

If you run a garage, machine shop, body shop, print shop, or a janitorial business, the roll of "shop towels" you grab a dozen times a day is probably the most-used supply in the building — and the easiest one to overpay for. Paper shop towels sit between household paper towels and laundered cloth rags: tougher, more absorbent, and cheap enough to throw away. When you buy them wholesale, the price per sheet can fall to pennies, but only if you get the specification right.

This guide covers what paper shop towels actually are, the formats and materials to choose between, the case-level price bands you can expect, and a supplier checklist so your next wholesale order is the right one.

What are paper shop towels?

Paper shop towels — also called disposable shop towels, shop wipers, or heavy-duty wipers — are single-use wipes built for dirty, oily wiping jobs. They are made from heavy creped paper, double re-crepe (DRC) paper cloth, or spunlace nonwoven fabric, and they are sold in sheet stacks, boxes, centerpull rolls, and jumbo rolls.

The key difference from a kitchen paper towel: shop towels are thicker and stronger, wet or dry, and they hold up to oil, grease, ink, and solvents without falling apart. The key difference from a cloth shop towel: paper shop towels are disposable, so there is no laundry bill, no rag service contract, and no risk of cross-contamination from reusing oily rags.

Two families matter when buying wholesale:

  • Disposable paper shop towels. Single-use wipers (DRC, spunlace, Sontara-style). Used by auto shops, manufacturing, food processing, and janitorial crews.
  • Blue (reusable) shop towels. Cloth-like cotton towels, usually blue, that can be washed and reused; sold bale-packed or by the case. Used where durability matters and a laundry cycle exists.

Why buy paper shop towels wholesale now

  • Cost per wipe drops with volume. At case level, per-sheet costs for disposable shop towels typically run well under a cent to a few cents, versus 3-8x that at retail. Shops that switch from retail to wholesale cut annual wiping spend by half or more.
  • Rag-service contracts are getting replaced. Rental/laundered shop towel programs carry monthly fees, minimums, and pickup logistics. Disposable paper shop towels remove the contract and give predictable per-wipe cost.
  • Sustainability is becoming a bid requirement. Disposable shop towels made with recycled fiber content (for example 40% post-consumer recycled material) help meet EPA procurement guidelines and LEED credits — increasingly required by corporate and government accounts.

Paper shop towel specifications to check

  • Sheet size. Common sizes: 13" × 13" (blue cloth-like), 9.84" × 13.78" (25 × 35 cm disposable), and 12"–15" roll widths. Larger sheets cost more per sheet but cover more area per wipe.
  • Basis weight / GSM. Disposable shop towels are typically 40-60 GSM; DRC cloth-like wipers run heavier for oil-heavy tasks. Ask for GSM in writing — it drives absorbency and tear resistance.
  • Ply / construction. Single-ply heavy crepe is the value tier; double re-crepe (DRC) and spunlace are the strength tiers. Spunlace feels cloth-like and is lint-free — preferred for painting, detailing, and food-contact wiping.
  • Count and put-up. Flat-packed 100-250 count boxes, quarter-fold, centerpull rolls (200-800 sheets), and jumbo rolls (up to 1,000+ feet) for high-volume dispensers.
  • Color. Blue hides dirt and is the convention for shop wipers; white is used where contamination visibility matters (food service).
  • Certifications. FSC-certified fiber, recycled content, and EPA/Green Seal documentation on request; foodservice buyers should confirm FDA-compliant materials.

Buying wholesale from a US distributor

For most shops and janitorial businesses, a US distributor is the practical path: case-level minimums, days-not-weeks delivery, and US-side compliance. That is the role Frontage Value plays — as a US-based distributor and importer, we supply commercial paper towels, including shop-towel and heavy-duty wiper formats, with equivalents to major national brands at factory-direct pricing. See our paper towels category or email info@frontagevalue.com for wholesale terms.

FAQ

What is the difference between shop towels and paper towels?
Shop towels are heavier, stronger wipes for oily/dirty jobs — disposable versions are made of heavy crepe, DRC, or spunlace. Household paper towels are lighter, fall apart on oil and solvents, and cost more per wipe in volume.

Are paper shop towels reusable?
Disposable paper shop towels are single-use by design. Blue cloth shop towels are washable and reusable — that is the family you want if you plan to launder and reuse.

What size paper shop towels should I buy?
Match sheet size to the job: 13" × 13" for general shop wiping, 25 × 35 cm / 9.84" × 13.78" for larger surface coverage, and jumbo rolls for dispenser-fed high-volume areas.

How much do shop paper towels cost wholesale?
Case-level disposable shop towels range roughly from $14-30 per case for standard boxes to $50-140 per case for DRC/spunlace heavy-duty wipers; blue cloth shop towels run about $28-46 per 100-towel bale. Volume and GSM drive the final price.

Do I need certified or recycled shop towels?
If you supply corporate, government, healthcare, or foodservice accounts, increasingly yes — recycled-content and FSC documentation are becoming bid requirements, and recycled fiber helps with LEED credits.

Should I import shop paper towels from China?
Import pricing is lowest at container scale, but you take on freight, duties, lead time, and QC. A US distributor gives case-level flexibility and fast delivery for a modest premium.
