What is terry cloth?
Terry cloth (or terry toweling) is a woven cotton fabric with uncut loops on one or both sides. Those loops are what make a towel absorbent: water is trapped between the loops and the base fabric instead of sitting on a flat surface. The loop pile is the heart of a towel — how it is spun, how densely it is woven, and what fiber it uses decide everything about performance.
Two pile constructions dominate the market:

1. GSM (grams per square meter) — the single most important spec. GSM is the most reliable way to compare towel quality:

Most hotels land in the 450-600 GSM range — plush enough for guests without extreme drying times or laundry weight. A suspiciously cheap quote almost always means low GSM.
2. Size. Standard bath towel is 27" x 54" (70 x 140 cm). Hand towels ~16" x 30", washcloths ~13" x 13". Hospitality programs usually standardize on one or two sizes for laundry efficiency — confirm dimensions in inches, not "large/medium".
3. Fiber content. 100% cotton is the default for absorbency and softness. Combed cotton is smoother and produces less lint than carded cotton. Egyptian/Supima cotton is a premium upgrade. Cotton-poly blends (e.g. 90/10) dry faster and resist mildew — common in budget hotels — but absorb less and feel less plush.
4. Yarn quality. Towel pile yarn is typically coarse (Ne 10-16). Higher-quality towels use ring-spun or zero-twist yarn for softness; carded open-end yarn is cheaper but rougher and pills more. Ask what spinning method the pile yarn uses.
5. Construction: pile height and density. Denser loops (more pile per square inch) mean better absorbency and durability. Two towels of the same GSM can feel very different if loop density differs — another reason to insist on samples.
6. Weight and edges. Double-stitched hems and reinforced edges survive commercial laundering far longer than single-stitch. Check the border weave — a dobby or jacquard border signals a higher-end loom and better quality control.
7. Shrinkage and color. Towels shrink and change texture in the first few washes — expect 5-8% dimensional change unless pre-washed or pre-shrunk. Reactive dyes hold color far better than direct dyes through repeated hot-water laundering.
8. Certification. For skin-contact textiles, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is the baseline. GOTS applies if you claim organic cotton. For hospitality, many chains also require flammability and chemical compliance documentation.
